THE CONCEPT OF RED. A friend told me that when he was taking a painting course, the teacher’s main focus was to get students to avoid thinking of colors in terms of concepts. Take the problem of painting a red piece of paper. If you think in terms of “the concept of red”, you will mix what you think is a matching red on your palette and use it uniformly (or, if a child, will take a red crayon) and be done. If you look at the paper, you will see that there are all kinds of tones on the surface.
