“NO WITNESS—NO CASE.” Mark Jacobson has an article in New York magazine (June 13-20) which is evidence that there are still defense lawyers who will break the law to win a case. The article is about Paul Bergrin, a New Jersey defense lawyer who won 14 straight murder cases. The article even has a comparison to Clarence Darrow (“…Clarence Darrow can’t win win fourteen homicide cases in a row, but Paul Bergrin can.”) Bergrin is currently in prison, charged by federal prosecutors with the killing of Kemo McCray, a witness against one of his clients, with an alleged quotation from Bergrin: “No Kemo, no case.” The article also describes two other instances when Bergrin is alleged to have tried to arrange for the killing of an important witness against a client. Bergrin was a hero to his clients. One prisoner is supposed to have a tattoo on his back: “No witness, no case—-Paul Bergrin.”
