IN PRAISE OF DIGRESSIONS. Terry Teachout objects to “lengthy digressions” in Tony Kushner’s new play, while Kushner thinks of putting “yummy nutritious ingredients” into a play. Kids, you are aware that from time to time I put a digression in the middle of a sentence. You should know that one of your mother’s two favorite student evaluations from her days of teaching college English is: “Miss Luzzo rises to her heights in her digressions.”
Her other favorite: “Our papers should not be graded so technical.”
My favorite punctuation mark in my academic papers was always the – – method. It’s probably not proper at all, although no professor ever called me out on it.
