LOOKING AT ONLY ONE OR TWO PAINTINGS IN A ROOM.

LOOKING AT ONLY ONE OR TWO PAINTINGS IN A ROOM. I say that I intend to look at the Google art project reproductions before going to museums in New York because I have long recognized my limitations in taking in visual information. I need to spend a lot of time with a painting to experience it. I try to pick out one or two paintings in any room in a museum and spend my time with them. I have been in London for only a handful of days in the last ten years. I have picked out at the National Gallery website two of the paintings that Nick and I spent time with. The first is Constable’s painting, Cenotaph to the Memory of Sir Joshua Reynolds. Here is the reproduction at the National Gallery site. Here is the reproduction at Google art project. The Google reproduction seems to be somewhat better, with more vivid colors. An important, but simple, difference common to any reproduction is that the Constable painting is over six feet high (at least in my memory). As to the other painting, Nick, who had had the opportunity to visit the National Gallery a number of times, challenged us to guess which was his favorite painting in one of the rooms. We all guessed correctly that it was this painting by Caspar David Friedrich. (only at the National Gallery site). It’s wonderful to be able to revisit these two paintings.

It was so wonderful having all of you there. Picking out a favorite painting in a room can be a great way of focusing your attention. When you’re in a place like the National Gallery or the Met it’s easy to get overwhelmed and move a bit too quickly in an effort to see everything.

Uncle Elmer & Aunt Margo are superb museum companions, as we did the Met last summer.

One last painting that I listed as a favorite – and was also in the room with the Friedrich was “The Execution of Lady Jane Grey” by Paul Delaroche. Google turns up a lot of results.
