SOME TECHNIQUES OF VAN DYCK’S PORTRAIT. It turns out that to get to the post I referred to yesterday, you should go from the Gurney Journey blog home page that I linked to and then to the Paint Technique section in the blog index. A couple of points to indicate the analysis in the post: The post discusses the layers of paint that Van Dyck used. There is a debate among historians about the composition of the layers. The softness of the edges of the pupils and the irises helps create the softness of the eyes. Notice the highlight on the bottom of the eyelid.
