TEXT WORDS ENTERING THE SPOKEN LANGUAGE.

TEXT WORDS ENTERING THE SPOKEN LANGUAGE. I posted here about the debate among linguists as to whether the “Lolcat” language has a grammar. This article, by Jocelyn Noveck of the AP with the headline “OMG, when did we start talking like txt msgs?” deals with another example of linguistics issues arising from use of the computer. People who text are now using text words or abbreviations when they are talking. For example, they say “ILY”—saying the letters—rather than “I love you.” Or one says “OMG” rather than Oh, My God.” Our friend Will says that in his middle school “OMG” is pronounced as if it were spelled “OMJ”—or “O—M—Jay.”
