“FOREIGNERS” IN THE STATE OF WASHINGTON. Kids, I took a particular interest in Jonathan Raban’s essay because, in connection with an antitrust case, I spent a lot of time in the two different parts of Washington that Raban describes—Spokane in the Eastern part of the state and Seattle in the Western part. I liked the people on both sides of the state, and for the most part I didn’t notice any conflicts between them, but I was frequently warned that I had to take the geographical divide into account in the course of the litigation. There was one time when I was conversing with the driver of the SUV taking me to the Spokane airport. When I mentioned that I was a lawyer, he said that he had a small apartment building in Spokane and all his tenants were law students. And, he said, they were all “foreigners.” I asked: “Foreigners”? Yes, he said, they were from Philadelphia and Atlanta and…Seattle.
