NEW YORK CITY—“AN ECOLOGICAL PARADISE.”.The New York magazine for September 20 advertises on the cover a wonderful article by Robert Sullivan about the rich ecology of New York City with the headline “The City as Ecological Paradise.” I have posted, for instance here, about the beauty that can be found in industrialized landscapes. Sullivan’s article is about how nature is flourishing in the industrialized environment of New York City. He makes the case that “nature is in many ways more plentiful in New York City than it is in the surrounding suburbs and rural counties.” As an example, Sullivan points out that almost half of the bird species in North America can be found in one wildlife refuge in the city.
