THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY—SOME FAMILY NOTES. Kids. we spoke of the Battle of Midway a number of times at our dinner table. My father often mentioned Torpedo Squadron 8 and teared up when he did so. My brother and I were born on June 4, 1942, around four in the morning, and my mother often spoke of how she couldn’t stop thinking about the war in the Pacific and her brothers fighting there during the days she was in the hospital (back then, mothers spent much more time in the hospital after giving birth). As I recounted here, over sixty years after the battle, after I listed the names of the young men in the torpedo squadrons at Midway, some family members of Wilfred N. McCoy found each other through a comment on this blog.
