“CHUGGERS.”

“CHUGGERS.” I have posted from time time on new words. This post is about “chuggers” because I am pleased by the etymology. Anne Kadet had an article in the weekend Wall Street Journal (May 28-29) about the clipboard-wielding fundraisers for charities that are found on the streets in New York and apparently in other cities like Boston and Seattle. Anne Kadet says they first came to the United States from Britain in 2001. We first encountered them a couple years ago in London near the Gloucester Road tube station. They were very aggressive, and somehow I am not surprised that Anne Kadet says that in many cases the funds collected never reach the charities. The etymology that I like so much? In Britain, “the tabloid press referred to them as ‘chuggers’, a contraction of ‘charity muggers.'”
