THE HANGOVER—ONE OF THE TEN BEST MOVIES OF 2009? We watched The Hangover last night. It’s a great movie. It ought to be one of the ten best movies of 2009 (I haven’t seen as many as ten 2009 movies, but I know what it takes for a movie to be in the top ten most years). The Hangover has a great classic plot: a quest— confronting dangers in an alien land— to rescue a friend (the missing bridegroom). Lots of wit. Social commentary. Google tells me that it got at least one top ten ranking—from the American Film Institute! The American Film Institute was criticized here for this ranking.

Comedies are chronically severely underrated in the film department.
That being said 2009 was a particularly strong year for movies. I personally enjoyed excellent films in very different genres in Inglourious Basterds, District 9, Zombieland, Avatar, Star Trek, and to a lesser extent, Sherlock Holmes. The Hurt Locker also apparently was superb.
The Hangover should certainly be ranked among the 10 Best as far as I know, and perhaps it’s just that I started going to movies again this year, but 2009 did very well movie-wise in my book.
And I neglected to mention arguably the best of all, Pixar’s Up.
Hate to triple post so quickly but I also left out Watchmen, Where the Wild Things Are, and the highly recommended Fantastic Mr. Fox.
