FASHIONS OF THE FIFTIES—THE CHEMISE. High fashion did affect middle America in the fifties. Yesterday’s posts brought back memories, including the high school awards ceremony at York Community High School for which almost every girl receiving an award had a new “sack” dress or “chemise.” Google let me check the timing on this. This article in Time Magazine in February, 1958 reported on the triumph of Yves Saint Laurent with the introduction of Dior’s spring collection of chemise dresses. Three or four months later, high school girls in Elmhurst, Illinois were wearing versions of the chemise.
