THE MOST POPULAR MOVIE OF THE SIXTIES. Jonathan Leaf points out the fact that The Sound of Music was the highest grossing movie of the Sixties as an example of the cultural conservatism of the decade. There were dissenters. Only one of my friends ever admitted to seeing it, and he couldn’t find anyone among the graduate students and law students of our acquaintance who would go with him. He finally had to go alone. He seemed to be a little proud that he had shown his independence. And he liked the movie.
