NOT THE BEST FILM OF ALL TIME. I mentioned ARSENIC AND OLD LACE just now in part because I was reminded of a story by Rob Gallo’s comment on the 100 best movies of all time. Rob speaks of “movies” and I do too, but there are serious critics who talk about “film.” My brother Elmer was at a party some forty years ago when he was approached by some Harvard undergraduates. There were taking a poll: “What was the best film of all time?” My brother said quickly: “ARSENIC AND OLD LACE.” He concluded that this was not the right answer.
