CARY GRANT, THE COMEDIAN. Right after I posted about Cary Grant, Mary Jane watched a documentary about Cary Grant that was narrated by Michael Caine. Caine pointed out that it was unusual that Grant, the handsome leading man, always looked for the comedy in his lines. I would also point out that Grant was a wonderful straight man. Take ARSENIC AND OLD LACE. Grant is the only normal character, and his reactions are essential to make the eccentrics who surround him funny. He also sets the rhythm of the movie and provides the manic energy that is necessary in farce.
