WOULD YOU LIKE BEING A CELEBRITY? I have never had regrets that when I made my career choices, I rejected being a star of stage and screen. I enjoy being the center of attention for short periods of time, but it has always seemed it would be difficult to shoulder the burden day after day. Over thirty years ago, a friend told us about going out to dinner at a restaurant with his friend Arthur Godfrey, who had been a huge star on television fifteen years earlier. With all the people crowding around Godfrey and asking for autographs, it took them half an hour to get seated. Godfrey enjoyed all of it. Our friend said that he couldn’t stand more than ten minutes of it.

I have a very talented actress friend, Andrea Garmun, who’s a bit younger than I am. She pointed out to me that if we became successful now, we’d still have our privacy. We’re not “hot.” Admittedly, Arthur Godfrey was never hot, but that was a different time and culture.
