LOLCAT. Lolcat is the dialect used on the website icanhascheezburger, where pictures of cute cats are posted, accompanied by captions written in, well, lolcat. (Jonathan Hope reviewed ALWAYS ON by by Naomi Baron and THE PRODIGAL TONGUE by Mark Abley in the Times Literary Supplement for September 5, 2008. Hope refers to the words alone as “lolcat.” However, this wikipedia article says that “lolcat” refers to the picture of the cat combined with the caption and says that the dialect by itself is known as “lolspeak.”) The dialect “parodies the poor grammar typically attributed to Internet slang.” Lolcat does not follow conventional grammar or conventional spelling. Here are some examples of sentences in lolcat: “i is a burrito” (kitten wrapped in two towels); “Don’t MAKE mi pull obber an cum bak dere…i will finish wutever u two startid” (cat at steering wheel); “THAZ RITE, U DOAN RLY WANTS DATS CHEEZBURGER JUS THROW AWAY IN DIS INCONSPIKUS GABAG CAN” (cat hiding in trash can).
