THE BIG BANG OR A BIG BOUNCE? I began this blog with a post expressing wonder that radio static was evidence of the Big Bang. What came before the Big Bang? I used to think that we could never know because the Big Bang would have destroyed all evidence of what went before. Now this article reports that a new theory called loop quantum cosmology proposes that our universe could conceivably have emerged from the collapse of a previous universe. “Instead of a universe that emerged from a point of infinite density, we will have one that recycles, possibly through an eternal series of expansions and contractions, with no beginning and no end.” Apparently, to my surprise, it is thought that there would be some evidence left of the Big Bounce because it is expected that the theory can make predictions that can actually be tested.
