“VOICES” USING SIGN LANGUAGE. We are familiar with mentally disturbed people who tell of hearing voices that no one else can hear—in some cases, voices which order them to kill. Lee Bryant sent me this link about a deaf person who received instructions to kill by “signing hands clad in black gloves telling him to commit murder.” I was surprised by this story, and have been wondering why I found it so surprising. The best answer I can come up with is that the person who hears voices seems to be operating outside of logic, and the story highlights the fact that those voices are using words and some kind of logic.
