CONFLICT OF INTEREST–GERHARD SCHROEDER.

CONFLICT OF INTEREST–GERHARD SCHROEDER. Imagine the head of state of a country retiring and accepting a lucrative position with a company controlled by another country. It happened. The former head of state is Gerhard Schroeder, who was the Chancellor of Germany from late 1998 until November 2005. After he retired, he immediately took an executive position with Gazprom, a huge energy company controlled by the Russian state. Try to imagine an American President retiring and then immediately going to work for a foreign government. Inconceivable. One wonders about German policies during the Schroeder years.

I don’t know if I can put aside my partisanship — I have refrained from saying this to many people — but i have always thought it wrong for Cheney to have negotiated deals for haliburton in the middle east, especially, as I believe he did, with Kuwait. I think a defense that he have would done the same in office regardless of the possibilitiy of future favors would seem factually persuasive, but when it became apparent that favors were possible, he should have reflected that the favors were “earned” by all Americans, especially those who fought int he Gulf War. Similarly I think that the Carlyle Group and some Bush relatives were wined and dined and maybe more in Kuwait after Bush senior left office, and if so, I think that was wrong. Issues also arise when politcal consultants are hired after they have advised foreign politicians on campaigning and, worse, on policy. “Immediately” removes issues of US officials who go to work for private groups and also important diplomats who somewhat or much later consult for foreign governments. As with so many conflicts, this kind of thing is right out in the open and nobody makes a fuss about it. Spouses and children of legislators are lobbyists at the state and federal levels. and the assertion that they never lobby the relative (only colleagues and agencies?) is accepted without a murmur.
