Y IS THE FOURTH OF JULY. One of my father’s favorite jokes for children was to say “Y is the fourth of July” on the fourth. The child is supposed to launch into his understanding of the meaning of the holiday. The punch line begins, “J is the first…..” This joke goes back to the Midwest in the early 1900’s. In my experience children who are between six and eight adore the joke.

A substitute teacher of mine loved this joke when I told it to him back in middle school. (He was known for his old-fashioned jokes.) I feel proud telling this joke because I always think of Grandpa. I wish I’d thought to say it to my campers this year!
Thanks for sharing this, Phil. I appreciate you sharing all these stories with us because my father doesn’t tell these stories (he tells other ones). I had never heard this one until your post. I did tell Mia this one this year and she was confused but amused.
