CRIME AND THE SEMI-COLON. Collins points out that the New York Police Department once speculated that the Son of Sam serial killer could be a freelance journalist because of the use of a semi-colon in the letters he sent.

    I regret the association of The Son of Sam with semi-colons. However, I doubt it has affected the reputation of that sterling punctuation mark. After all, The Son of Sam was also associated with a dog, and people still like dogs.
