THE SOUND OF BELLS (COMMENT).

THE SOUND OF BELLS (COMMENT). Annalisa commented here that, “I love to think of an area being defined by how well you could hear the church bell! Love it.” Mary Jane pointed out that there is a famous example. A Cockney is somebody who is born “within earshot of the Bow Bells, i.e. the bells of St Mary-le-Bow church in Cheapside in the City of London,” The City of London did a study in 2000, and “it was estimated that the bells would have been heard six miles to the east, five miles to the north, three miles to the south, and four miles to the west.”
