OUR FAMILY AND THE CHICAGO FIRE.

OUR FAMILY AND THE CHICAGO FIRE. There was an ornamental drinking glass on our mantelpiece when I was growing up. My great grandmother had taken it with her when her family left their home to flee the approaching Chicago Fire. She brought it with her because she thought that she could use it if her children wanted a drink of water from the Chicago River. She expected to return home. It was the only one of their possessions to survive the Fire (other than the clothes they were wearing).
