CONTESTED CONVENTIONS (UPDATE).

CONTESTED CONVENTIONS (UPDATE). Back in January, I expressed my desire for a return to contested conventions. It looks as if there might be one. It is hard to see the Republican nomination being sorted out quickly. Further, Michigan and Florida are challenging the custom by which the nominations are decided by a small number of voters in New Hampshire and Iowa. I expressed my opinion that a contested convention might help the candidate that is nominated. Here Jeff Greenfield reviews the fight for the Democratic nomination in 1984, and says, “And the complaint that a lengthy process leaves the victor too battered to compete in the general election simply ignores history.”
