ROWLING FOR NOBEL PRIZE? I have seen that a fans have sought to nominate J. K. Rowling for the Nobel Prize in Literature. I think she is worthy of it. There have been few writers with her genius for telling a complex story–Dickens, Dostoevsky, Robertson Davies. Books that appeal to children are wrongly excluded from serious literature. And if not Rowling, why not Philip Pullman?
People may complain about Rowling’s overuse of adjectives, adverbs, and italicized writing (I’ve seen all these criticisms), but I think it’s undoubtedly clear that she can write a page-turner. This is a skill that goes unsung by critics and English professors, in my experience. I believe that effective plotting should be applauded. As an aspiring writer myself, I find it difficult to create a plot that thrums along at a pace that makes the reader want to keep up. And if readers aren’t interested in finishing your book, what use is it?
I can only hope that plotting is not an inborn skill, because I really want to learn it myself.
